The sweet spot is usually May to June. September can also be lovely, but there are never any guarantees. July and August are too busy, and also a bit midgey for my taste, though it makes no big difference unless you are planning to camp.
Yes, and I didn't even mention the delicious local food - seafood, venison and beef, especially, or the wonderfully hospitable places we stayed, including backpackers hostels, farmhouse B&Bs and quiet but luxurious modern country hotels.
