10 islands in a week: by car or bike
The Outer Hebrides is the perfect 'away from it all' holiday.
So, you've decided to discover the enchanting Outer Hebrides. In a car, you can start from Oban and return via Ullapool, and government subsidies make the island hopping ferry tickets a surprisingly affordable Spring, Summer or early Autumn adventure.
I drove this with my wife, in our battery electric Nissan Leaf and it was a bucket-list trip for us both. Charging places were mostly at the various ferry ports, and we charged overnight in some locations without too much hassle using the three pin plug ‘granny lead’.
There is a good choice of lodgings too, from cheery backpackers and bunkhouses, to friendly farmhouse B&B’s, comfy hotels and welcoming campsites. Of course some will take their motorhomes, but these can be a hazard on narrow single track roads, and its far more sociable to use local accommodations.
Why not travel by bike, and have the ride of a lifetime? The Hebridean Way Cycling Route is a 185-mile (297km) route, crossing 10 islands in the archipelago.
Highlights include lovely beaches, ancient crofts, mysterious brochs and castles, and the astonishing ancient stone circle at Callanish , which predates the pyramids of Egypt by a thousand years.
This attached itinerary by ‘Visit Scotland’ highlights exciting things to see and do and attractions along the way which will sometimes include slight detours from the official route. You can find more information on cycling the Hebridean Way, including maps and mileages per day, as well as bike hire and other travel tips.
Have fun - or just dream!

Heres the ferry booking page - its wise to book in advance as the ferries can be rather busy in Summer and peak season.
Thanks Rob. I love cycling although my energy is reduced at the moment due to various things including NHS incompetence.
Being in West Sussex, Scotland is a long way although I do have relatives near Perth.
